The beautiful, historic town of Old Saybrook, CT, is one of New England’s last remaining waterfront hidden gems. Saybrook Point Inn, Marina, & Spa is nestled between the tranquil Connecticut River and the vast Long Island Sound within minutes of Old Saybrook’s most popular attractions, such as “The Kate,” Harvey’s Beach, Fenwick Golf Course, and Gillette Castle State Park. But today, we would like to draw your attention to Old Saybrook’s lesser-known Connecticut attractions. With so many things to do in CT, sometimes it’s nice to visit a local establishment before it becomes the “next big thing.”
30 Mile Brewing Company
Despite establishing in 2015 and brewing over 120 different beers to date, 30 Mile Brewing Company remains one of the premier hidden gems in CT. 30 Mile Brewing has set up shop in a new development on Ragged Rocked Road on the north end of town. The interior, much like the exterior, isn’t visually-pleasing or overly artistic, but the high-quality beer is worth the short 2.5-mile drive from Saybrook Point Inn. We recommend trying the double dry-hopped Belgian IPA, roasty brown ale, or their rotating “Going Sour” series. 30 Mile is open four nights a week (Thursday-Sunday).
Black Hall Outfitters / Great Island Wildlife Area
You won’t find better prices on kayak and SUP rentals in the area than at Black Hall Outfitters, located across the Connecticut River in Old Lyme. Black Hall has direct access to the Great Island Wildlife Area, a beautiful 500-acre preserve filled with secluded waterways, thriving wildlife, and scenic beaches. Make sure to bring your binoculars because Great Island has a diverse bird population! Black Hall also specializes in kayak fishing, a growing American craze, as well as eco-tours. While sailing is often considered one of the top things to do in CT, kayaking and SUPing are becoming much more prevalent.
Florence Griswold Museum
It’s a shame that the Florence Griswold Museum is often overshadowed by the area’s seemingly neverending array of historical attractions. The Griswold Museum is home to one of the largest collections of American impressionism art in the world. While the museum’s art collections, exhibits, and special events are the main events, the late-19th-century home’s architecture and lush grounds are spellbinding. Inside the museum, you’ll discover works of art by the likes of Childe Hassam, John Henry Twachtman, Edmund Greacen, and Willard Metcalf.
Marina-Front Connecticut Resorts
“Real Escape” and Mini-Golf at Saybrook Point are two more of our favorite of our favorite things to do in CT, and both of are within walking distance of the inn! Saybrook Point Inn is also home to marina-front fine dining, luxurious accommodations, and one of the premier day spas in CT: SANNO Spa and Health Club. After each full day of relaxation, exploration, and fresh-caught seafood, retreat to your group-friendly guesthouse for a bottle of wine at dusk on your private balcony.
